Road Safety @ Dangerpoint
In addition to DangerPoints core work with key stage 2 children we also work with many young drivers and their peers. Our road safety work aims to engage and educate children and young people in different elements of road safety to become responsible road users.
Young people between the ages of 17 and 25 are one of the most vulnerable groups to be seriously injured or killed on roads. Part of DangerPoint’s focus is to drive forward Road Safety Initiatives to young people at the centre and in other settings across North Wales:
North Wales Police Engagement Vehicle: This is taken out to different venues across North Wales to work with young drivers. It is used to explain how speed, seatbelts, mobile phones, drink, drugs and peer pressure all increase the risks for this age group. If you have an event that you think would be suitable for the van please email van@dangerpoint.org.uk or contact your local neighbourhood policing team.
Motor Education Scheme: This scheme was developed to educate young people of the risks involved with vehicle crime. It brings together Local Authorities, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, North Wales Police, Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust and DangerPoint to try and reduce vehicle offending and road traffic casualties in young people. Over 100 young people so far have taken part in this innovative programme. Since its inception the scheme has gone from strength to strength with most recently the development of an educational DVD and associated toolkit. North Wales Road Safety Camera Partnership Arrive Alive has kindly supported the most recent event in Flintshire.
National Road Safety Week: Every year DangerPoint organises a week long event to support the national road safety campaign. Previous event themes have been young drivers, cycle safety and walking to school safely. In previous years Toyota kindly provided every child who visited the centre during the week with a high visibility vest. Last year’s event took place between the 10th and 14th November. We held 3 days activities for year 6 children with the 2 remaining days focusing on year 12 students.
